Lot 206 – 15th October 2016
Lot 206: A bust of John Travers Cornwell; ‘The Boy Hero’
A bust of John Travers Cornwell, of HMS Chester, Royal Navy, inscribed to the reverse ‘The Boy, Aged 16, Hero of Jutland Battle, Faithful Unto Death’. Cornwell was a sight-setter on the ship’s forward 5.5″ gun and was badly wounded by a direct hit on his station. He remained at his post despite most of his crew-mates having been killed and he was subjected to further heavy shelling, before eventually making it to hospital, where he died. He was buried in a communal grace in East London but after a public outcry, he was exhumed and re-buried with full naval honours and was later awarded the Victoria Cross. The bust is approximately 12cm tall and carries the crest for South Queensferry, with a stamp to the base reading ‘J. Edmond, South Queensferry’.
Estimate: £80 – £120
